The S.N. Schell & Sons Trading Company pioneered the "chain" general store concept in Miller and Cole Counties, Missouri, offering top quality merchandise and available credit. At one time or another, members of the Schell family operated stores in St. Thomas, St. Elizabeth, Eugene, Mary's Home and possibly Argyle. The company also operated a music store in Jefferson City managed by Peter J. Schell.

In 2013, it is estimated there are more than 1,000 living descendents of S.N. Schell and M.E. Wankum-Schell.

Identifications based upon 1972 Interview of Alma (Schell) Oligschlaeger by her granddaughter, Mary (Oligschlaeger) Wright.
